Where do ASDOG dogs come from?
ASDOGs puppies are chosen from specific breeders that have dogs which are kind and gentle
with people, have a high tolerance to physical contact and a willingness to please.
How much do they cost?
Trained assistance dogs are valued at over $20,000 each. However through the generosity of donors the applicant pays only an application fee. ASDOG provides the dog free of charge.
Can Assistance Dogs be excluded from food outlets or considered a health risk
in public places?
No.Government Legislation covers the access and use by Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs
to these areas. However some people may be anxious or nervous about the assistance dog or they may request that the animal be removed. Reassure them that the dog is thoroughly trained and has a legal right to be there.
These dogs are highly valuable and provide an indispensable service to their recipients.
In what ways are Assistance Dogs trained in functions beyond those of Guide dogs and Hearing dogs?
These dogs provide a much needed role in assisting persons with a physical disability. Typically, these dogs are trained to carry out a number of tasks that the person cannot carry out.
For example: the dogs may be trained to pick up, fetch or retrieve a dropped article. This could
be a wallet, a pen or many other items that a person with a physical disability may need picked
up on a daily basis.
Additional tasks may include opening a door or cupboard, operating a light switch or going for assistance. These dogs are trained to provide a level of independence and safety that the person with a physical disability would not otherwise have.
Assisting the physically disabled in their everyday functions is of paramount importance to ASDOG, so much so that their goals, training and philosophy are carefully designed to be inclusive rather than exclusive.
